UK/China Exchange

I was really fortunate this summer to have been chosen to take part in the UK/China exchange, sponsored by New World China Land .

In June I collaborated with a student from the Wuhan textile university, when they came to Portsmouth. These photos show the outcome of our work. We had four days to complete this project which made it a big challenge. My partner and I both have a keen interest in illustration so we began by generating motifs that we could use on our garment. The language barrier meant this was a good way for way for us to communicate and express our ideas.

We developed our design by exploring deconstruction/ reconstruction of second hand clothing. Re-designing old clothing like this was really inspiring and helped to progress our designs, we added hand embroidery to achieve the intricate finishing details we wanted to demonstrate.

My partner and I are both thrilled with the results and are really excited to work together again during the second half of this exchange, this will take place in China at the Wuhan textile university in November.

Extreme makeover

This trench coat has under gone an extreme makeover, based on the words ‘broken’ and ‘distorted’. Inspiration has been taken from modern and obscure city scenes. Featuring odd angles and geometric shapes, this project will explore extreme silhouettes and the distortion of classic and conventional fashion.
